Gwenlyn E. “Gwen” Carter, 87, passed away at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, 2018, in Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw.
She was born Sept. 25, 1930, in Warsaw, to Lester and Beryl Murphy Young. Her stepfather was Alfred “Flip” Phillips.
She was a lifetime resident of Kosciusko County. Gwen graduated from Warsaw High School in 1948.
On Aug. 16, 1953, she was united in marriage to William “Bill” Carter, who preceded her in death in April 1990. They were married for almost 37 years.
She received a B.A. in speech and hearing therapy from Ball State University and prior to that she attended Manchester College.
She worked at many places throughout her life, including Lake City Bank for five years, First National Bank for 30 years, Dr. John Thomas ENT for eight years and also Buyer-Carter’s Department Store in Bluffton. She and Bill loved antiques and owned Buggy Wheel Antiques for several years.
Her social affiliations included AKO Alpha Chi Omega sorority, Tri Kappa and American Legion Auxiliary Post 49. She was a member of Saint Anne’s Episcopal Church and participated in the cheeseball and prayer blanket ministries. In addition, she enjoyed playing euchre and bridge, and has had season tickets at the Wagon Wheel Theatre for over 20 years.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda (spouse Dave) Francis; son, Kevin (spouse Angie) Carter; grandchildren: Ryan (spouse Saagar Patel) Francis and Lindsay (partner Lisa Little) Francis, Casey and Cade Carter, and Cody Sunday; and a great-grandchild, Luna Sunday.
Visitation is scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, in Saint Anne’s Episcopal Church, Warsaw.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, in the church, with Father Brian Grantz officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.
