Fire Station Costs

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:
Contrary to rumor, I have not met a councilman who is against providing fire station services to the south side of Warsaw.  The concern I hear from people is about the cost.  When I vote, I vote for people who assure me they are fiscally conservative.
Other communities are providing excellent service without expensive buildings.  If your loved one had a medical emergency at Miller’s Merry Manor, you would want trained help there fast.  You would not care about the brick and mortar curb appeal of the building that the rescue personnel drove out of.  Why not build a fire station we can afford?
There are communities who have built fire stations for less.  Southwest Allen County built a four-bay station two years ago that cost $2 million in today’s dollars.  Kokomo built a two-bay station four years ago that cost $1.9 million in today’s dollars.  Rochester built a 5 bay station in 2008 that cost $1.9 million in today’s dollars.  Leesburg built a four-bay station in 1998 that cost $1.6 million in today’s dollars.
If you really care about your constituents, you will construct the building they need at a cost they can afford.
The Warsaw City Council meeting is Monday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m.
