Local firefighters responded to nine grass/field fires Wednesday, according to central dispatch. Pictured is one near the intersection of CRs 500E and 600S near Pierceton that was started by downed power lines. According to Geoffrey Heidelberger, meteorologist at the National?Weather Service in North Webster, the combination of strong winds and dry air made conditions ripe for fire.“It didn’t take much to start,” he said. Winds averaged 50 to 55 mph through the county, peaking at 65 mph in Mentone, he said.
