Every Child Left Behind

Editor, Times-Union:

Governor Daniels has decided to make our kids pay for his mistakes. He lost a bundle on his effort to privatize family and social services. He then decided that supporting Lucas sports arena was more important than schools. I also note he had the money to host a party in Miami for the Super Bowl.

To pay for all this he is asking our kids to give up anything that makes school fun. Art, Music, reduced library services, some extracurricular activities and no field trips.

The children are also supposed to get by with larger classes, no counselors in many schools, no nurses in many schools. Some schools have had to cancel all-day kindergarten, which was one of the governors pet projects. Some school are being closed and children forced into crowded buildings with longer bus rides.

Not all schools are doing all of these things, but these are some of the ways schools are being forced to cope with the budget cuts.

Schools have been coping with short budgets the last few years and the fat has already been cut in most cases.

I am conservative but I don't believe we should balance the budget on the backs of our kids. Let's let our legislators know how we feel.
