Embryos for Research? What Infertility Patients Say

Current federal policies do not reflect the preferences of most infertility patients who have faced the personal moral challenge of deciding what to do with their frozen embryos, asserts a recent study. In a survey answered by more than 1,000 patients who have created and frozen embryos as part of fertility treatment, 60 percent say they would be likely to donate unused embryos for stem-cell research, according to a study led by researchers at Duke and John Hopkins Universities. The researched published their findings in the July 6, 2007, Science.

Among those patients surveyed, research proved to be the most desirable option for disposition of excess embryos; other options including donation to another infertile couple or destruction of the embryos were far less desirable. These findings suggest that the number of embryos potentially available for stem-cell research may be 10 times higher than previous estimates, resulting in a potential of 100-fold increase in the number of stem cell lines - groups of stem cells derived from a single source.

The above institutions are not known for being wild-eyed loose cannon and their findings are worthy of thoughtful consideration.

It is baffling to me that one political faction abhors big government, and the implications thereof, and yet it wants to regulate "We, the People's" private lives.
