Elections

Editor, Times-Union:

As the 2010 mid-term elections draw near, consequently we need to ask ourselves who are we voting for and what are we voting for.

Certainly, the health care debate over the last two years made me aware of the mindset of the elite who control this country. I have watched as Democrats tried to push through meaningful human development reforms and all Republicans could do was say no. I also watched as millions of dollars was spent by big business and the Republican Party to keep the status quo. Already major Republicans say that if they get the majority in Congress they will repeal what little health care reform actually made it through.

As of Sept. 23, health insurance companies can no longer deny care to children with pre-existing conditions. Also, young adults can stay on their parents' insurance until they are 26. No doubt two major accomplishments for the human development of this country, however, Republicans want nothing to do with it.Mike Huckabee, one of the leading Republicans, said that insuring sick children is like insuring a house that is already burnt down. Basically, he believes it's just not cost effective to take care of sick people. He so easily puts a dollar sign on human suffering. He is strictly in it to protect the wealthy and the corporations, period. However, this is the normal mindset of the Republican Party.

Without a doubt, it seems only when the government is under Democratic control do issues like health care and other human development issues even get debated. Just remember when you vote in November: Do we need to focus on the human development aspect of our society? Or do we need to keep feeding the narcissistic personality of the Republican Party no matter what the cost?

Do not let the millions of dollars spent on propagandist adds deceive you. They are self-absorbed and have been nurtured on the milk of selfishness.

The Republicans pander to strong groups in our society such as the NRA and the religious right to satisfy their monied ambitions and their conservative dogmas. Much like how the Byzantine emperor Alexius I used the anger of the Christians to fight his self-serving wars against the infidels. Not unlike Alexius I, the Republicans use their talking points to stir up the anger of certain groups of citizens in this country, therefore, to take up arms and join the holy war to recover our country. However, they are not trying to recover anything; essentially they already have the very country which they created decades ago. It is just a mythology they are creating to recruit soldiers to keep the status quo, which protects and reinforces their assorted empires.

Just ask yourself when you go to the polls this November: Am I voting for the chance to promote the human condition of the working class and the less fortunate in this country? Or, am I voting to further protect the wealthy and the corporations?
