Editor, Times-Union: Let’s get real. Romney-Ryan was the only sane choice. Sadly, insanity ruled the day. Most folk, too busy in their work world to follow all media campaign propaganda, many simply have held their nose and voted like Gary Gerard who saw this election as choosing between the “lesser of evils.” (see News Views Nov. 3). Antique generationers, like my wife and I remembering the Depression and war years of our youth before Uncle Sam morphed into Santa Claus passing out millions of food stamps and other goodies, “reminisce” about an America we grew up in that mostly no longer exists. Sadly we, like Gary G., find ourselves following election day’s results mostly “giving up on the notion of our country ever returning to the principles on which it was founded.” “Getting real” about those foundational principles was the theme of Linda Torpy’s excellent letter of Election Day (see page 5A Nov. 6). Following our Declaration of Independence (July 4, 1776), Linda noted our founding father’s designed the Constitution “to perpetuate a Christian order” – “establishing self-government” as “the foundation stone of America.” Likewise, in 1931, Supreme Court Justice George Sutherland reiterated that Americans are a “Christian people” and in 1952, Justice Wm. O Douglas affirmed “we are a religious people and our institutions presuppose a supreme being.” (i.e. a Creator who endows us with “certain unalienable rights” to “life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.”) Building upon this self-evident truth in a creator, Christian educator reformers like Wm. McGuffey and Noah Webster created volumes of Christ-friendly textbooks for primary and secondary schools. Unfortunately, these successful texts early in our nation’s history were interrupted by Obama-like transformers – men like Horace Mann, John Dewey and Charles Darwin established public school systems, curriculum and textbooks that in time removed the Creator. His words and commandments. It logically followed in the early 1960s that a majority of Supreme Court Justices, influenced by years of secular humanist indoctrination, expelled the creator of public schools. In 1973, the justices added insult to injury by opening a door of choice for the expulsion of our creator’s most important creation ... His precious unborn image bearers from conception ... i.e. a legal right of choice to abort our own innocent offspring. It is therefore logical to foresee Obamacare as a similar road leading to the expulsion of God’s senior image bearers at the other end of life? Let’s get real one last time. It’s real that the once-independent self-governing majority and foundation stone of our Constitution Republic in George Washington’s day has devolved into the very dependent Democracy of 50 percent in the pockets of the Democrat Party in Barack Obama’s day. It’s real also this same party is in total control of Santa’s Entitlement Enterprises providing Big Government Entitlement Enterprises providing big government handouts to all willing to forever be dependent upon and slavishly voting for the masters of “the party.” “In God We Trust” is replaced by: “Let’s get real – In Government We Trust!” By contrast at this most critical time, this senior (yours truly) Proud to be an American and a veteran, too, humbled remembering the sacrifices our veterans gave, determined their lives given for our freedom were not in vain, pray we use the powers we still have as citizens to rein in big government so that it never becomes our master.
