SOUTH BEND – Eleanor Devere Batson, 91, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2018, in her home.
Eleanor was born April 29, 1927, in Edwardsburg, Mich., to the late John and Mable Eggleston Lindsley. On March 15, 1944, in South Bend, Eleanor married Harry Batson; he preceded her in death on June 28, 1994.
Eleanor was also preceded in death by her daughters, Mary Ellen Batson and Catherine Jean Batson Smith; sons, Bruce Emery Batson and Lawrence “Larry” Jay Batson; three grandchildren; sisters, Noriene Peterson Brennan and Jessie Batson; brother, Earl “Buster” Lindsley; sisters-in-law, Esther Murphy and Dorothy Sampson: and brothers-in-law, Carl Batson and Jay Batson.
Survivors of Eleanor include her children, Harry Allen Batson of Leesburg and Nancy (Ted) Batson Grocke of Leesburg; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Eleanor retired in 1987 from the Raco Corp., where she worked for 18½ years. She enjoyed singing, reading, puzzles, and most of all cooking and caring for her family. Eleanor always had a smile on her face and a hug and kiss to share. She taught her family to always be respectful and kind to everyone, just like the person she was.
Visitation for Eleanor was planned from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today, Jan. 4, in St. Joseph Funeral Home, 824 S. Mayflower Road, with the funeral service at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery.
