Editor, Times-Union: April 22, 1970, was the first Earth Day celebration. Approximately 10 percent of the population took part in this grassroots celebration of our planet. What one thing can you do this year to make a difference in our community? There are many things to choose from: increase your recycling, buy products with the least amount of packaging, make your errand runs more efficient, choose to reuse whenever possible, properly dispose of unused chemicals, choose to use less chemicals on your gardens and lawns, and the list goes on and on. One I would like to suggest is: Do not litter! How sad it is to see papers, cans and fast food containers along our country roadways and city streets. Every spring I receive emails from property owners who spend a good deal of their time cleaning up what others toss out. How I appreciate what these residents do, using their time, bags and trash disposal for others’ trash. I sincerely believe that Kosciusko residents can do a better job of caring for our environment. Picking up trash is something that we can all do. We need to make our towns and countryside inviting to visitors and keeping the roadsides litter-free is just one way of doing that. To that end, KC Recycling Depot has safety vests, bags and free disposal during the month of April for anyone or group who would like to do this project. Just come in during business hours or call 574-327-3087 to reserve your cleanup kit. Earth Day is about making a difference in our environment: What can you do?
