Don Spice

AKRON – Don Spice,  93, of Rochester and formerly of the Akron and Silver Lake areas, died at 1:13 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, 2018, at the Visiting Nurse & Hospice Home of Fort Wayne.

He was born May 13, 1925,  in Fort Wayne, to Sidney and Hester Ulrey Spice.

On April 19, 1947, in Akron, in a ceremony led by Rev. Slaybaugh, he married Lorene Rhodes, who preceded him on March 19, 2018.

He was a dairy farmer. He started milking cows in his junior year of high school and he and his wife retired in the late ‘80’s.

He attended the Akron Church of God. He enjoyed carpenter work and had built many houses.  He also enjoyed woodworking with his wife by his side. He was known to always keep an immaculate yard and well-maintained cars.

Survivors include a daughter, Susan, and husband Rick Green, Warsaw; a son, Dennis, and wife Linda Spice, Champaign, Ill.; a son-in-law,  Michael Reed, Argos; six grandchildren, Melissa and husband Wayne Lance, Aimee and husband Luke Hrabosky, Kristie and husband Justin Hayes,  Danielle Spice, Kevin and wife Vanessa Green, Eric and wife Amber Green and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Sharon Reed (2011); brothers Paul (1952) and Clyde Sid (2005).

Services will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 4 at Hartzler Funeral Home, 305 West Rochester St., Akron. Pastor Kathy Nelson will officiate.

Burial will be at  Akron Cemetery, Akron.

Visitation hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, at Hartzler Funeral Home, Akron.
