Difficult Situation

Editor, Times-Union:

On the morning of March 18, I took my 6-month-old daughter to the emergency room at KCH. She was examined by Dr. Hartman, who immediately ordered a CT scan. After examining the scans, Dr. Hartman found a severe head injury, and ordered her transported to Lutheran Trauma Center. She immediately underwent surgery to remove bleeding to her brain. My daughter spent 10 days in ICU at Lutheran, not expected to live.

The doctors say this injury could only happen by my child being severely shaken, so, of course, police detectives and Child Protective Services were involved. Warsaw Police Det. Steve Adang and CPS caseworker Kelly Bugg worked doggedly to investigate and bring this case to a conclusion.

It has been a difficult five months, but my daughter is much better. She survived, against the odds, thanks to the wonderful care and monitoring she was given by all the medical professionals.

I want to take this time to thank Dr. Hartman for his quick response, and his care and compassion on that initial visit to the emergency room. If it was not for his quick expertise, I do not believe my daughter would be with us.

I also want to thank Steve Adang and Kelly Bugg for all their tireless effort to resolve this case. They have both been a strong advocate, and supportive shoulders. They have been there to answer all my questions, and have done everything in their power to see this through to an appropriate conclusion.

Unfortunately, all their hard work did not change the mind of the prosecutor. He has elected not to charge anyone in connection with the injury to my child. I only hope he never has to be in my shoes, and it be his child or grandchild who is injured this way.
