NORTH MANCHESTER – DeWayne D. Monce, 88, North Manchester, passed away at 12:45 p.m. Feb. 12, 2015, at Timbercrest Healthcare, North Manchester. He was born Dec. 22, 1926, to Daniel Rupert and Bonnie Baker Monce. On May 18, 1947, he married Jane Ann Burkhart Monce, who preceeded him in death July 17, 1996. He was the manager of the FW Means Company. He also had his own cleaning business and cleaned many institutions and companies in Warsaw until he was in his late 70s. He retired from Lowman’s Enterprises (National Dust), Warsaw. He graduated from Urbana High School in 1945. He served in the European Theater as a communication specialist, sitting in shacks in the mountains intercepting enemy messages. He was proud to be a World War II veteran. He was a member of American Legion Post #286 and Moose Lodge #1518, both in North Manchester. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge, Warsaw. He and his wife Jane fostered 19 foster children. He has many nieces and nephews he leaves behind. He loved people and serving, which is why he spent his time working the jobs he did. He taught his children an amazing work ethic and the gift of hospitality. Anyone who knew Jane and DeWayne knows their home was never without someone “dropping” in. His favorite story was sitting on Otto Winger’s knee as talked to The Indian Chief. He said as a little boy this was quite a day. He shall always be loved and missed. Surviving are two sons, Vincent Drake (and spouse Missy) Monce, Enon, Ohio, and Tony (and spouse Teri) Monce, Silver Lake; two daughters, Deborah (and spouse Lennie) Edwards Jr., Warsaw, and Hannah Long, Apache Junction, Ariz.; a brother, Donald E. (and spouse Alice) Monce, Fort Wayne; a sister, Donna Yentes, Urbana; seven grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. He was preceeded in death by his parents and a brother, David Monce. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at McKee Mortuary, 1401 Ind. 114W, North Manchester, with Pastor J.P. Freeman officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.
