In a previous letter to this newspaper, I suggested it would be appropriate to publish expenses borne by the taxpaying public in support of the illegal immigrant population in our community. That suggestion went unacknowledged and drew zero response from either the Times-Union or any elected official.
With tax due dates only a few weeks away, I would like to use this column as a forum to make a formal request that these expenses be made public for the past two years. In my opinion, this information would reach the maximum number of citizens by being reported in the Times-Union.
It is further my opinion that as the local representative of the free press we hear so much about that the Times-Union owes this kind of reporting and information to the community that it serves. If the editorial staff and management of the newspaper disagree with that, please explain why in an editor's note to this letter. I am not trying to pick a fight with the newspaper, I am just trying to learn who is responsible for advising the taxpayers as to how, and on what, their money is being spent. That does not seem in any way unreasonable to me. Particularly with the lack of compunction at all levels of government when they increase taxes to meet their agendas. If elected officials spent as much time deliberating cost control measures and how to eliminate give-away programs (that benefit only politicians seeking votes) as they do devising ways to get their hands into taxpayer's pockets, I wouldn't be writing this.
I personally think, and if anyone with authority to make change cared enough to ask, they would find quickly that the vast majority of Americans and residents of this county are totally disgusted with the failure of government at every level to protect the interest of the populace. They are even more disgusted with the prospect of having to provide financing to support a growing illegal immigrant population, which is in many respects directly or indirectly responsible for many of the ills our community and country face today. It would be a welcome and pleasant surprise if someone in city, county or state government showed enough disdain for political correctness to take some actions that are in the interest of America and the people who live here legally.
