SYRACUSE – Deloris L. “Rene” Hayes, 83, and loved by many, Syracuse, passed away at 10:18 a.m. Sept. 18, 2015, in her residence.
She was born April 11, 1932, in Marshall County, to Cleo and Estelle Pierce Frazier. On Oct. 16, 1954, she married James R. Priest who preceded her in death March 9, 1964. On Feb. 1, 1970, she married James H. Hayes who also preceded her in death Dec. 7, 2001.
She graduated from Wawasee High School in Syracuse. She was a homemaker and formerly worked at Penn Control in Goshen, IUSB Cafeteria in South Bend, and at Twentieth Century (6 &15) Restaurant in New Paris. She formerly lived in Kansas, Germany, Georgia, South Bend and Nappanee, and she made lifelong friends wherever she went.
She was a member of the former Church of the Brethren in Syracuse, Eagles Lodge in South Bend and was a volunteer at the Syracuse Community Center. She was on several bowling leagues, enjoyed crocheting, traveling, bingo and was an avid card player. She was also always quick with a joke, a smile and a hug.
Survivors are: four daughters: Melodie Hale, Osceola; Brenda (and spouse Stephen) Strope, Mishawaka; Deborah Hayes, South Bend; and Tina (and spouse Stephen) Roussos, Freeman, S.D.; eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, a brother, Lawrence “Doc” (and spouse Mary) Frazier, Millersburg, countless cousins, and nieces and nephews who loved her dearly. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a son, Kenneth Hayes, a great-grandson, Izaya Michael Baiz-Hickey, a sister, Ruth Frazier, and three brothers: Cecil, Willard and Lewis "Lewie" Frazier.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Syracuse Community Center, 1013 N. Long Drive, Syracuse, with the Rev. Stephen Roussos of the Freeman Missionary Church officiating. A celebration of life with food, music, memories and laughter will follow. All are welcome. Cremation is at Cremation Services of Kosciusko County, Warsaw.
