Editor, Times-Union: Today, at Warsaw Community Church, hundreds of mourners paid tribute to Warsaw City Councilman Charlie Smith and his son, Scott. That was just the two hours or so that I was there; the lines continued throughout the afternoon and evening. What a stunning tribute. I am not surprised. Having attended many Warsaw City Council meetings for several years, I like and appreciate each council member, their hard work, loyalty and commitment to the betterment of Warsaw. Everyone, in their own way, has made a significant contribution to our community. No council member better exemplifies this than has Charlie Smith. Charlie brought to the council a breadth of knowledge and experience that will be sorely missed. He had a genuine concern for this city and its citizens. He made everyone feel like a friend, and was the very definition of a leader. Charlie’s steadfast passion for Warsaw was well known. Not for Warsaw to be merely a great city, but an exemplary, prosperous, growing city. His vision will be a endless model for our current and future leaders. Additionally, the memorial for Charlie at the city council meeting last week is one I will never forget. The heart-rending comments made by the mayor, clerk-treasurer and council members were extraordinary and unforgettable. Having witnessed it made me even more proud to call the Warsaw community my home. Everyone lost in that horrible plane crash 10 days ago will be greatly missed. All were honorable and esteemed citizens evidenced by the huge crowds that attended each of their memorials. We are extremely blessed to have had them as part of our community. I am sure all Warsaw, and surrounding area citizens, mourn this enormous loss of these four outstanding men and join DeAnna and me in extending our deepest sympathy to their families.
