Editor, Times-Union:
After nearly five months of leaving for Indianapolis on Sunday afternoon and returning Friday morning, it is good to be back in my community. I miss my family. especially my grandchildren, Bella and Roman, and my bed. I am not complaining because I love what I do but it is good to be home.
This session is one for the record books. After two sessions of walk outs and demonstrations, this session was one of getting along and working together. As chairman of Family Children and Human Affairs, we worked together, both Republicans and Democrats, as a team to do all we could to keep Hoosier children safe. Together we passed bills such as the  National Background Check for child care employees and volunteers. Please check  the Indiana General Assembly website for bills that maybe of interest to you.
Our greatest success was once again was a balanced budget.  Keep in mind that three budgets are introduced, the House, Senate and Governor's version, and all have to agree on one.  Politics is always a compromise between all parties to do what is best for the State of Indiana. This budget not only keeps us in the black, unlike most other states in the country, we maintain our AAA rating, funded our obligations to retirees, repealed the death tax, restored education funding to pre-recession levels, just to name a few of our many accomplishments.
Being in the super-majority has its challenges. Some have been critical of the House Republicans for not doing more.  Thanks to Speaker Bosma's leadership, it was made very clear that we were not going to become bullies simply because we were in that position. What is right for Indiana is that we work together to do what is best for all Hoosiers. What is wrong in Washington, D.C., is that parties refuse to work together. The result is that nothing gets done.
Washington could take a page from our legislators and actually accomplish something. We have proven that living within your means, protecting our children, and providing the best possible education for all children is something we can all agree on. We may all have different ways of getting there, but in the end we know that were are expected to come together in agreement to reach our goals.
It has been my honor to represent District 22 this session and look forward to another successful year in the State House. As alway's, please feel free to call me at 574-457-4458 or email me at r.kubacki@mchsi.com if you have any concerns. I look forward to seeing you at the supermarket or at the next community event.
