Editor, Times-Union: I am against the Common Core Standards one-size-fits-all national takeover of education.
I believe that local control of education is the best. If a parent has an issue with the curriculum, the best situation is that they could be able to address it with the local school board. I feel the second-best situation is they would address it with the state they live in. The worst situation is to have to try to address it at the federal level.
The Common Core Standards were adopted in Indiana without our sate legislature being involved. Why is this even possible in Indiana?
My biggest problem with the Common Core Standards is the loss of local control. Even if the standards were good in and of themselves, I would be against them because of the loss of local control. The Common Core Standards are a set back in the quality of Indiana education.
