Editor, Times-Union: December 7, 1941, began as a tranquil Sunday morning in Hawaii when suddenly the peace of that sunny day was sharply interrupted by hundreds of Japanese military planes filling the skies over our Naval and other bases at Pearl Harbor. Japan’s surprise attack marked that day as their diabolical declaration of war on our country. Thousands were killed and wounded that unforgettably fateful day. We who survived and thankfully are still alive will forever remember Pearl Harbor and who our enemies were. Tuesday morning Sept. 11, 2001, marked the beginning of another peaceful sunny day when once again peace was cruelly interrupted by four large passenger and fuel filled airliners hijacked by Islamic Jihadists. New York City’s Twin Towers and Washington’s Pentagon were three of the main targets that day when radical Islamists declared war on our nation. Once again, thousands were killed including hundreds of firemen and policemen answering their call to duty. Also once again, those fortunate to survive will forever remember 9-11-01 and who our enemies were and still are. Tuesday Sept. 11, 2012, Benghazi, Libya, began another uneasy day for U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and others assigned to or in support of our embassy. Unlike the surprise attacks of 1941 and 2001, we all should have remembered that radical Islamists were and always will be at war against us, the Great Satan. It’s the main tenet of their fanatical religious belief. Incomprehensibly, before this September 11 was over in Benghazi, tragic history repeated itself on a day we should have been on highest alert following a year of and Sept. 11 day of repeated requests for help from Ambassador Stevens and three other Americans brutally murdered that day. More incomprehensible are the many facts surfacing providing evidence of extreme deception, incompetence, and scapegoating by our current administration led by President Obama. Our Constitution clearly holds the president responsible for the protection of and safety of “we the people” from all enemies within and without our borders. Disregarding the many calls for help over the past year and especially those on Sept. 11, our president conveniently forgot, went to bed, and resumed the more important business of campaigning for his re-election the next day. In this nefarious process, the sacrifice of and memory of Ambassador Stevens and other American patriots killed the day before was trashed. It is our sincere hope and prayer at this critical time of election that we each honor those heroes who have already given lives and limbs. Each answered their call to duty responsibly and heroically even when such ended in a little known field near Shanksville, Penn. (9-11-01 Flight 93). We honor also those many others who have chosen a profession in which their life may any day be sacrificed for another. “Greater love has no one that this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends,” so proclaimed Jesus, the one who made the ultimate sacrifice at Calvary for our eternal rescue. We pray also that every day be a Memorial Day, a Thanksgiving Day so that Election Day be a special and privileged call to duty day for each eligible, informed and responsible voter. Remember, therefore, Romney-Ryan is the only responsible wise choice forward to recovery. Respectfully, Jean and Ray Webster Warsaw
