Cancer Sucks

Posted

Editor, Times-Union:
For the past seven decades, I have been dealing with cancer. I am sick of it taking those I love too soon. I lost my dad as a young teen, my mother, my husband, and in 2012, I fought and survived small-cell lung cancer. I have had to say goodbye to many dear friends along the way.
Cancer sucks!
I'm writing because throughout my life, I have seen cancer treatment improve, the research has made it possible for many to survive, and many breakthroughs are getting closer. Clinical trials have improved treatments for patients. Advancements are being made across the board for many, if not all, types of cancers.
However, this is no longer the case, as research projects have been shut down since January, funds have been withheld, and programs have been closed. All data is lost, and much can never be replaced. Laboratories cannot work to eradicate this devastating disease without funding! Cancer research in America is now over. All the data will be lost; it cannot help you, your family, or any of my family or friends. Our scientists and researchers are fleeing the country to continue their work overseas. What a sad state of affairs!
Who wants this tragedy?
I do not understand why our government has made these decisions. I am horrified that our country no longer values research and the wonders it has accomplished over the last 50 years.
I find myself screaming, “WHY?”
