Can Do

Editor, Times-Union:

Thanks to Steve Stewart for getting a response into the "Letters to the Editor" section. His statements are a fact - there are those of us, even on fixed incomes, that can afford an extra few can goods for a food pantry when we shop. And, if I do a few cans, and each house in the neighborhood would do a few cans, just think what we can do.

After seeing this week's report about our local Salvation Army only having three cans of fruit and a package of toilet paper on their shelves, I've been trying to figure out how do we get those who can afford to help doing just that - helping. I have no definitive answer, but here's a try:

If there are people who don't have time to shop - call me - I'll pick up your money, shop for you and deliver the final product for you - and send the receipt for your records.

If there are people who don't know how to do something like this - call me - I'll do it for you.

If every church in the county and industry would designate an area for needed pantry supplies what a huge help this would be.

It doesn't take a lot from just one person, it just takes a lot of persons doing a little on a regular basis to fill the need. It's so simple.

There is no excuse for a child to go to bed hungry, go to school hungry or a parent anguish over how to feed their family when we are a county of plenty. We just can't wait for "someone will take care of them" when we are capable. It's our turn, give, help, sleep well knowing you're putting food in some little one's empty tummy today.
