NORTH MANCHESTER – Billy J. Spann, 87, of North Manchester, died at 7:40 p.m. Sept. 18, 2012, in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.

He was born Feb. 17, 1925, in Whitley County, to Jesse L. and Odessa Spitler Spann. On Aug. 5, 1951, he married Martha J. Elliott, who died Dec. 22, 2003.

He worked for his brother, Maynard Spann, at Pierceton Lumber Co. and was later manager of Miller & Sons Lumber Co., Pierceton. Upon its closure he was transferred to Miller & Sons Lumber Co., Silver Lake, where he was building estimator until his retirement. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Korean War. He was a member of Liberty Mills Church of the Brethren and graduated from Chester High School in 1943.  

Surviving are three sons, Thomas J. (and spouse Sherrie) Spann, Peter E. (and spouse Lisa) Spann and Joel K. (and spouse Rhonda) Spann, all of North Manchester; two daughters, Tanya (and spouse Robert) Moyer and Julie (and spouse Jeff) Walters, all of North Manchester; a brother, Phil (and spouse Carol) Spann, North Manchester; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Liberty Mills Church of the Brethren with Pastor Erin Huiras officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, North Manchester.

Calling is from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday at McKee Mortuary, North Manchester, and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.
