A Lafayette man was arrested Sunday on suspicion of attempted murder after a drug deal apparently went awry and a woman was shot, according to a news release from the Warsaw Police Department.
Edward Bishop, 25, Lafayette, was arrested on initial charges of attempted murder, criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, counterfeiting, possession of narcotics with intent to deal, and possession of marijuana with intend to deal.
Police were led to Bishop after investigating the shooting of a woman who suffered a wound to her left forearm near U.S 30 and Ind. 15, around 11:30 p.m. Friday.
Shortly after the woman was shot, Bishop reported being robbed and pepper sprayed at Lassus Handy?Dandy south of where the woman was shot.
Police believe the incidents are related.
Police reports indicate the woman and her passengers had set up a meeting to purchase an ounce of marijuana in the Warsaw Walmart parking lot.
The drug deal quickly soured when Bishop allegedly approached the victim’s car with a handgun. The victim then pepper sprayed Bishop and started to drive away when Bishop allegedly fired at the car, striking the woman in the arm.
The woman drove south from the location to get away and then pulled off the road and called police.
Warsaw police obtained search warrants for both vehicles and cellular devices. After a search and interviews with witnesses, police arrested Bishop.
The victim was taken to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne with non-life threatening injuries.
Warsaw Police say no one involved in the case was from the Warsaw area.
The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are expected, police said.
