Area HS Roundup: Wawasee 8th, Valley 12th At Rochester

ROCHESTER – Despite being a player down, Wawasee’s girls golf team finished eighth in the Rochester Invitational Saturday at Mill Creek/Round Barn Golf Club. Tippecanoe Valley was 12th, and Whitko participated but didn’t field a full team.
Penn was the team champion, and Plymouth finished second.
Aubrey Schmeltz paced Wawasee with an 88, while Zoe White shot 100, Lesley Tayagua 109 and Jadison Rostochak a 118.
Valley’s Victoria Biddle shot a 91, with Makayla Sandbakken checking in at 109. Blake McBrier shot 113, Jordan Krotke a 125, and Bethany Johnson 142.
Whitko was represented by Claire Reiff, who shot a 114, with Alexys Rider and Makayla Compton each at 135.
Wawasee will open Northern Lakes Conference play today at Goshen, in a match moved up from Tuesday, at Maplecrest Country Club. Valley will take on Bremen and host Triton at Rozella Ford Golf club in Warsaw Wednesday. Whitko travels to Honeywell Golf Club today for a Three Rivers Conference match with host Wabash.

Lady Tigers Fourth In Warsaw Invitational
Senior classmates Madi Graham and Page Desenberg shot 42 and 45, respectively, leading the Lady Tigers to a 187 score and a fourth-place finish in their Warsaw Invitational Saturday at Stonehenge Country Club. The tournament was shortened to nine holes due to rain.
Homestead was the tournament champion, posting a 151. The Lady Spartans’ Morgan Debagia was the medalist, shooting a 31.
Madelyn Ray shot a 49 for Warsaw, with Izzy Ray coming in at 51 and Delaney Wihebrink at 54.
“I'm proud of the way the girls battled through the rainy and windy conditions to shoot our average for the year,” Lady Tiger head coach Tad Nieter said.
Warsaw opens Northern Lakes Conference play Tuesday with a three-way match at Northridge and with Concord.

Warsaw VB 4th At Kokomo Invitational
KOKOMO – The Warsaw Lady Tiger volleyball team finished with a 3-1 record and a fourth-place finish in the Kokomo Invitational Saturday.
The Lady Tigers defeated Indianapolis Lighthouse: 25-3, 25-9; Tindley: 25-23, 26-24 and Kokomo: 25-12, 25-10. Their only loss of the tournament was a 25-18, 22-25, 18-16 match to Fishers.
Rachel Yeager had 32 service aces in the tournament. Nikki Parrett had 31 kills and two blocks. Hanna Leach added 27 kills, Kacy Bragg had 50 assists and 10 kills, and Erin Peugh had 31 digs and nine assists over the course of the day.
Warsaw will travel to Fort Wayne for a match with Homestead at 7:15 p.m. today.

Lady Tiger Soccer Drops Two In Tourney
LAKEVILLE – Warsaw’s girls soccer team dropped its two games in the St. Joseph Invitational Saturday, falling 4-3 to Chesterton in the morning and 4-0  to Penn in the afternoon.
Abby Steffensmeir, Julie Frazzetta and Delaney Taylor scored goals for the Lady Tigers in the opener. Steffensmeir was unassisted, Frazzetta was assisted by Brenna Shipley, and Taylor scored on a penalty kick.
Warsaw, 2-3, opens play in the Northern Lakes Conference on Thursday when NorthWood comes to town. Varsity kickoff is scheduled for 6:45 p.m.

Squire Boys Win 3-0
HUNTINGTON – The Manchester boys soccer team scored three times in the first half en route to a 3-0 win at Huntington North Saturday.
The Squire junior varsity got a 5-2 win over the Viking JV.
Manchester travels to Fulton for a non-conference match with Caston Tuesday.

Lady Squire VB Splits Four Matches In Tourney
ELWOOD – After dropping its first two matches of the day, Manchester’s volleyball team came back to win its last two matches over Southern Wells (25-18, 25-100 and Clinton Central (24-26, 25-23, 15-9) in the Elwood Invitational Saturday.
The Lady Squires lost to Danville in three sets and host Elwood in two sets.
Manchester hosts Whitko in Three Rivers Conference play on Thursday.

Cougars Blank Wildcats
WINONA LAKE – Noel Blum had two goals and Theran McKeever added a goal in Lakeland Christian Academy’s 3-0 boys soccer win over Whitko Saturday night.
The Cougars controlled the ball for most of the game, and had many scoring opportunities, according to LCA head coach Vincent Sell. Blum opened the scoring by converting a penalty kick in the first half, with the other two goals scored after halftime.
Lakeland Christian improved to 2-1 on the season, and will host Bethany Christian on Thursday. Whitko (0-3) will travel to Peru for a Three Rivers Conference match today.

Lady Cougars VB Drops Four In Tourney
LIGONIER – Lakeland Christian Academy’s volleyball team lost all four of its matches in the West Noble Invitational Saturday. The Lady Cougars fell to the host Lady Chargers 25-4, 25-10 in the first match, 25-6, 25-16 to Heritage, 25-8, 25-11 to Churubusco and 25-13, 25-16 to Bethany Christian.
LCA will get a rematch from the tournament when it hosts Bethany Christian at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Triton Tennis Drops Only Match In Tourney
MISHAWAKA – Triton’s boys tennis team fell 3-2 to South Bend Riley in the only match the Trojans were able to play in the Mishawaka Marian Invitational Saturday. The rest of the tournament was rained out.
The Trojans got straight-set wins from Mace Eads at No. 1 singles, and Carter Kuntz at No. 3 singles.
Triton will host North Judson in Hoosier North Athletic Conference play Tuesday.

Wawasee Falls To Concord In NLC Opener
SYRACUSE – Wawasee’s boys soccer team fell to 0-2-1 on the season with a 3-0 loss to Concord in the Warriors’ 2016 Northern Lakes Conference opener Saturday.
The Warriors will play a road game against Hamilton today.

Wawasee Falls 3-0 To Westview
SYRACUSE – Visiting Westview beat Wawasee 3-0 in a girls soccer match Saturday afternoon.
“It was a well-played game. Westview handled the basics better than we did, which led to them controlling the game,” said Wawasee head coach Doug Heinisch. “We played hard and had a few good opportunities, but could not put the ball away in the net.”
Wawasee (2-1) will hit the road for a match Tuesday against the Manchester Lady Squires.
