Animal Cruelty

Editor, Times-Union:

To all the animal lovers out there that love and take good care of their pets, you are excluded from this letter. To those of you that think it is a throw away society for animals, shame on you.

I get a sick feeling in my stomach every morning wondering what I will find as I pull into work. Will it be a mommy dog chained to a fence with her five puppies lying in the parking lot with no protection from the minus-5 degree temperature? Or a litter of 4-week old puppies huddled in a corner with an inch of snow on them? Or maybe a Chihuahua that has been thrown over a 6-foot fence and now suffers from a broken leg?

Come on, people. Do you actually have children that you are allowed to raise? Subconsciously, you are teaching your children the same practices. So many times I will be speaking with a group of children and they will have their stories of having this dog or that dog but their Mom or Dad got tired of it and took it to the pound. This is not instilling very good values in your children to take responsibility. This will carry over in other aspects of their lives.

Here are three easy rules: Do not get a pet if you can't deal with the life-long commitment to care for it. If you don't want puppies, get your animal spayed. If the kids need to see the miracle of birth, set them down in front of the Discovery channel.

I have never seen a more cold and cruel county toward animals than ours. If you cannot care for your animal any longer, please bring it to us during open hours. If the bond of love has been broken, we would rather have the animal than to burden you with it. Yes, we do charge that huge surrender fee of $25 that probably causes most of you to abandon your animal after hours, but do you know that fee covers food, vaccinations, dewormings, heartworm test and any other medical procedures that the animal may need?

We need to have some laws put into effect to protect the animals and punish the owners. Just for further reference, we do have surveillance cameras and we do know who you are if we choose to prosecute. Let's try to become a bit more compassionate for the animals and our children's sake.
