Alice LaVern Ditmer Cassell

POTSDAM, OHIO – Alice LaVern Ditmer Cassell, 89, Arcanum, Ohio, passed June 26, 2014. She was born March 23, 1925, on Red River West Grove Road, Ohio, to Harley and Susie Miller Ditmer. On Feb. 23, 1946, in Pitsburg, Ohio, she married Bernie Cassell. She graduated from Monroe High School, Pitsburg, in 1944. She was a homemaker and mother. She was a 4-H advisor for 20 years for the Monroe Banner 4-H Club. She was very active in the Church of the Brethren. She grew up at Pitsburg Church of the Brethren and accepted Christ in 1937. She became a lifetime deacon in 1970 at Potsdam Church of the Brethren where she taught primary Sunday School class for 50 years. She served on many commissions of the church. She, along with her family, were caretakers of the church for many years. She enjoyed singing, playing piano, playing her coronet and played in her school bands for nine years. She loved taking pictures and decorated the bulletin board at church, as well as doing many photo albums. She was very creative and liked to paint. She was a wonderful cook. Most of all, she loved the Lord. Surviving are three daughters: Sue (and spouse Kerry) Price, Milford; Brenda Shiverdecker, Arcanum, Ohio; and Rosemary (and spouse Tom) Harvey, Warren; two sons, Roger (and spouse Carole) Cassell, South Haven, Mich., and Jeff (and spouse Margret) Cassell, Vandalia, Ohio; nine grandchildren: Kevin (and spouse Lori) Price; Kara (and spouse Mark) Messmore; Ryan (and spouse Holly) Shiverdecker; Adam Shiverdecker; Katelin (and spouse Tony) Herber; Brittany (and spouse Brian) Soderquist; and Heather, Lauren and Kacie Cassell; two step-grandchildren, Zach Sheehy and D J Lawson; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were two sisters, Anna Lucille and Mabel Elizabeth Ditmer Wenger. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Potsdam Church of the Brethren with Pastor Robert W. Kurtz officiating. Burial will follow in Mote Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the church. ***** Memorials may be made to Potsdam Church of the Brethren, 22 E.
