Akron July 4

Since when is the 4th of July celebrated on July 7?

We are writing this letter with much concern because we feel that it is utterly ridiculous that the Akron 4th of July celebration is going to be on July 7 this year. It is not fair to those people who have to work six days a week and will not be able to attend the activities because they have to work. A great example of this situation would be of the employees of The United States Postal Service that have no choice and will have to deliver mail on July 7 since it is not a holiday.

Independence Day is supposed to be celebrated on July 4 because that is when our nation was founded. This holiday has been celebrated on the fourth for many years, no matter what day it lands on, except for if it landed on Sunday, for example, then it would be celebrated on the following Monday.

I believe that the town of Akron should keep the celebration on the fourth and not change it just because a few people do not want to celebrate it during the week. The people that do not want to celebrate it during the week do not have to participate, but it is still not fair to those who have other obligations, such as their job, on the weekend to miss the celebration.

We are all 18 years of age or younger, but we have all celebrated Independence Day on July 4 all our lives and we think it should stay that way!

We have also talked to several other community members that live in the Akron area, and they feel the exact same way we do about this situation. We all realize our voices may and probably will not make a difference, but for once, we just want ourselves to be heard instead of our parents. So why doesn't the town of Akron keep the 4th of July celebration on July 4 just like it has always been and should be?
