Aiko Svendsen, 82, of Nappanee, died at 5:25 p.m. May 16, 2009, in Elkhart General Hospital after a long illness.
He was born Aug. 25, 1926, in Nigata, Japan, to Gin Pay and Ume Sato Moriyama. On Dec. 10, 1953, she married Earl Svendsen, who survives.
She formerly worked at Mercy Hospital, Elwood, and Ascot Industries, Nappanee. She was a member of American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliaries.
Also surviving are a daughter, Lumi (and spouse Devoe) Hoffer, New Paris; a son, John Thomas (and spouse Wanda) Svendsen, Pensicola, Fla.; a granddaughter; two great-grandsons; and three sisters and a brother, all in Japan.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Mennonite Church, Nappanee, with Connie Swihart officiating.
