I am writing in response to Tami Miller's "Adult Video" letter in yesterday's Times-Union.
In my opinion, I don't see this being a big issue. However, I would like to point out a few things.
Firstly, I have friends who are employed by Family Video. I am glad (as I'm sure they are) to have another business open its doors in our community and provide employment to folks who need it in such a desperate time.
Next, the store is named as such due to the fact that it is a privately owned company, owned and operated by the Hoogland Family. Also, I wonder if you might want to boycott Comcast, Dish Network, DirecTV or any other television provider since they also offer adult-only programming at the push of a button. And as far as a child wandering into that area, I would put that responsibility solely on the parent(s) in that situation. Personally, I wish people would stop letting their kids rip through stores unsupervised anyhow.
I honestly can't remember anyone writing in upset over Video World having an adult section. Then again, they haven't been out of business very long either, so I'm not really sure about people "pushing pornographic material out of Warsaw."
Look, my point is this: It comes down to personal choice, like smoking, scratching off a lottery ticket or having a drink. If you choose not to partake, fine. But, don't go trying to close down the businesses that provide these things just because you don't agree with it. These businesses also provide something that people need - jobs!
At the end of the day there are evils staring you in the face everywhere you look. But, I'm a little more concerned with the guy cooking meth down the street where people's kids walk to school than the guy from apartment 3C renting a skin flick.
