Editor, Times-Union: Even if you’re wrong, if you bully people enough, you can be considered right. This time of year some of the biggest bullies are in the ACLU. It opposes Christian displays in public places like schools and in town squares. It supposedly uses the First Amendment to forbid the presentation of the symbols of the season. The first part of the First Amendment states: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. The ACLU must consider schools, town halls, police departments, firehouses and other public places a part of Congress. Why aren’t there hundreds of thousands of Congress people? If the ACLU is correct, our ballots in November will have to grow to include the Congressional districts we didn’t know existed. Congress can’t make laws prohibiting the free exercise of religion. It’s Constitutional to pray in schools, erect a cross in the public square, and hold revival meetings in school gyms. When I was a kid in North Manchester, the God Squad held services in the high school gym. The ACLU didn’t prevent the services or me when I prayed at my graduation ceremony at Hillcrest High School in Springfield, Mo. Why doesn’t the ACLU insist government offices stay open on Sundays since it is the Christian day of rest? The ACLU should realize President Jefferson started church services in the Capitol Building that were well-attended. It’s long past the time when the ACLU should have been taken on by those who adhere to the Constitution and Christianity. The ACLU has fined those that haven’t taken down crosses deemed offensive to a few. Leave them up and countersue the ACLU for more money and take it to court. It should prove a cemetery is part of Congress with a voting member to be justified. If the cemetery isn’t a Congressional district with its own congressman, the ACLU would be fined until it drops the suit. If the ACLU can be defeated, maybe the celebration of Christmas will become more evident in public. The ACLU has defended New-Nazis who had perverted values. If it fights against Godly values, it should be soundly defeated. Christians will be bold to share the true meaning of the season without fearing the wrath of the ACLU. Besides, it’s my First Amendment civil right to say Merry Christmas and God bless you. Rick Badman Warsaw
