Abortion

Editor, Times-Union:

You really don't think Obama banning abortion will automatically end abortions in the world? The clouds will part. The sun will come out. Everything will be perfect.

Whether it's legal or not, it's going to happen. Even if we don't like it. It's not like these places invite women in on a red carpet offering champagne and asking how many abortions they want today. It would force women in America to (undergo) illegal and dangerous operations. Possibly spreading disease.

Obama is always being blamed for abortion since he started running. It's to a point it's a laughable, irritating political ploy.

Of course, it's no coincidence that politicians are constantly asked about even late-term abortion. When, if ever, do we talk about first-trimester abortion, which accounts for almost 90 percent of all abortions in this country?

The answer is "rarely," and there's a reason why. In the 1990s, anti-abortion rights activists identified an extremely effective strategy when they crafted their campaign against what they called "partial-birth abortion." By describing it as if it were being performed on fully developed, viable fetuses, they connected abortion to infanticide in people's minds.

They ignored the fact that the procedure (before Congress banned it) was used primarily around the midpoint of pregnancy, well before a fetus could survive outside the womb, and that no type of abortion is performed in this country after a fetus is viable, unless there is a medical reason.

Just 11 percent of all abortions in this country happen after the 12th week of pregnancy and 1 percent occur after 21 weeks.

Even if Obama did ban abortions, it still won't end. Just like murder and rape is illegal. It doesn't stop people from doing it. Putting a ban on everything. Crossing our fingers and hoping it will be swept under the carpet.

What about babies being born with AIDS in foreign countries? Do we just let them die a slow death?

If banned, how many young women would endure disease, medical mishaps, disfiguration or possible death from infection? It's achieving one goal and replacing it with a bigger problem. At least legalized abortion is safe.

Not all our tax dollars goes toward abortion procedures. It does provide prevention. I guess that part wasn't read.

It's a no-win situation, Mr Koontz.

We need more prevention programs, not banning it all together.
