100 Days

Editor, Times-Union:

When our schools celebrated “100 Days” recently, it felt pretty remarkable. Of the many lessons learned during this pandemic, one rings true: Take nothing for granted.

Whether parents work outside the home or not, the burden of childcare stings when the unexpected occurs, and I can say, from a household of two full-time working parents, the 100-day mark felt like a miracle – one I know didn’t occur in a vacuum.

I didn’t want the occasion to pass without giving heartfelt thanks to the teachers, staff, drivers and administrators at Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation. While there have been some virtual learning days at some of our schools, Mentone (big knock-on-wood) has remained successfully open, and there are no words to describe how lucky we are, in this community, to have made it this far with our kids still in school.

I wish I was Taylor Swift or Ellen or Oprah and I could give every teacher, custodian, bus driver and lunch person in our corporation a big thank-you bonus. But I’m not, and so I’ll at least offer a big thank-you.

To any other parent out there who shouted “Hallelujah” when your kids went back to school, I urge you to send in your thanks as well so that our public schools feel the love this Valentine’s Day. I can think of no better year than this to express our gratitude for all that they do, which is likely far more than we know.
