Grace’s men’s basketball team earned a gritty double overtime win over Cornerstone on Thursday.
The Warsaw Lady Tigers got off to a quick start in the opening round of Thursday’s Lady Tiger Tournament and never looked back. Hosting the 44th annual high school girls basketball event, Warsaw scored the first eight points of the game, led 18-3 after the first quarter and beat the Chesterton Trojans 54-17.
The Tippecanoe Valley Lady Vikings continued their winning ways Thursday and will take quite a bit of momentum into 2022. Playing in the West Noble Classic, Valley’s varsity girls basketball team defeated Lakeland 54-42 in the first round, followed by a 45-27 victory over the host Chargers that upped their season record to 10-5.
Wawasee earned places in three weight classes at the ultra-tough Al Smith Classic, which ended its two-day run Thursday, Dec. 30 at Mishawaka High School.
For the second consecutive night, Warsaw hoops dropped the championship game of its holiday tournament on the Tiger Den floor. On Wednesday, it was the boys side dropping a tough one to Fort Wayne Dwenger. On Thursday, it was the Lady Tigers who were unable to finish off the holiday tourney with a win, falling 63-57 to Garrett. The loss drops Warsaw’s record to 11-5 this winter.
Three Wawasee wrestlers earned the right to wrestle on the second day of the 42nd Al Smith Classic at Mishawaka High School. Coming through the losers’ bracket in the 32-team event were senior Dylan Tom (126 pounds), junior Logan Stuckman (132) and junior Gavin Malone (160). Tom went 3-1 (including two pins) Wednesday while Stuckman (overtime decision in his final match) and Malone (four pins) were both 4-1.
After Tuesday night’s game looked more similar to NBA All-Star Weekend as opposed to a normal night in a high school gym, the Warsaw Tigers offense was brought back down to Earth by Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger on Wednesday. The end result: a 47-39 loss that saw the Tigers held under the 40 point mark for just the third time this season. The loss snaps a four-game Warsaw win streak, and drops the Tigers mark to 6-3 this winter.
It almost looked as if Matt Moore’s Tigers were playing video games with their little brother. As the oldest of four myself, I know the feeling. Not helping with controls, dominating every aspect of the game and hitting shots that only the pros hit. On their way to an 88-50 victory over South Bend Washington Tuesday night, the Tigers did all of that and more in what was their second win of the day, fourth in a row and fifth out of six games.

Playing in the Tiger Den for the first time in nearly a month, Warsaw’s varsity girls basketball team gave the home fans plenty to cheer about Wednesday night, and gave the scouts in attendance from Northridge and Goshen something to think about.
Taking on the 2A No. 1 Central Noble Cougars, the Warriors of Wawasee punched back every time they were knocked down in a close contest that came down to the wire. With the game tie through three quarters, it was the Warriors inability to score the ball in the fourth quarter that doomed the team in a 40-34 loss.
Scoring 10 points in the first four minutes, the Wawasee Warriors looked to be on their way to a victory over 9-4 Central Noble. But difficulty holding onto and scoring the basketball throughout the rest of the contest would be the difference, as the offensive miscues would doom the Warriors in a 48-39 loss Wednesday night.

Jaxson Gould continued his torrid scoring pace, and the Warsaw Tigers put together what coach Matt Moore called their most complete game of the season. In the final matchup of the six-game Champions of Character Classic at Grace College’s Manahan Orthopedic Capital Center Saturday, Gould scored a game-high 32 points as the Tigers pulled out a 63-60 win over the Fort Wayne North Side Legends.
