Warsaw Community High School Holds Signing Day
34 Times-Union readership area athletes among four schools had a strong performance in Saturday’s Plymouth wrestling sectional. These athletes advance to this coming Saturday’s Penn sectional at 9 a.m. The Wawasee Warriors (12 regional qualifiers) finished second in team scoring (249.5 points) to the host Plymouth Rockies (250.5 points), who clinched the team title with a major decision victory in the 285-pound championship bout, the afternoon’s final match.

Both the Manchester University men’s and women’s cross country programs were honored by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as All-Academic Team recipients, the organization announced this week.

Led by junior guard Cade Brenner’s 31-point, nine-rebound, three-assist, three-steal performance, host NorthWood sailed past the Tigers 70-51 in boys high school basketball Friday night before a near-capacity crowd estimated at 3,500.
For all 32 minutes, the Tippecanoe Valley Vikings and Manchester Squires took turns playing hot potato with the lead. Neither team led by more than eight, the game was tied seven different times and the lead changed hands a staggering 12. But a late push in the final minutes of the game proved to be the difference as the Vikings emerged with a 55-49 victory over their Three Rivers Conference opponent Squires to earn its fifth straight victory.
The Manchester University women’s basketball team put up a good fight on the road at nationally-ranked and unbeaten Transylvania University on Wednesday afternoon. The Spartans held the third-ranked Pioneers to their lowest point total of the season in a 64-36 midweek setback. Transylvania also scored a 64 points against both Bluffton and Rose-Hulman in early December.

The Manchester University women’s swimming & diving team has earned Scholar All-Academic honors from the Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA), as announced by the organization on Tuesday.
Grace’s men’s basketball team was unable to secure the season sweep of No. 16 Marian, falling 82-67 on Tuesday. The No. 9 Lancers (18-5, 7-4 Crossroads League) shot under 30 percent on 3-pointers and committed 13 more turnovers than the Knights (15-4, 7-4 CL).
Leading by double digits earlier in the contest, the visiting Wawasee Warriors saw their lead turn into a one-point deficit to the Tippecanoe Valley Lady Vikings Tuesday night. The response was a 17-0 run to end the quarter and put an exclamation point on a 53-45 nonconference victory, Wawasee’s first regular season victory over the Lady Vikings since 2013. The Warriors move back up to .500 at 11-11, while Tippy Valley has its four game winning streak snapped and falls to 14-7.
Visiting Earlham College was able to make a basket with 2.8 seconds left in regulation to secure a narrow 73-71 victory over Manchester inside of Stauffer-Wolfe Arena on Saturday.
Grace’s women’s basketball picked up its fifth straight victory with a 68-58 win over Mt. Vernon Nazarene on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Lady Lancers (15-7, 5-5 Crossroads League) move into fifth place overall in the Crossroads League and are tied for the third-most wins.
The Warsaw Tigers boys’ basketball team opened a rare boys’/girls’ varsity doubleheader in the Tiger Den by toppling Class 4A #5 Valparaiso 57-51. The Tigers executed a solid team effort where two- and three-men combos within the Tigers’ starting lineup contributed in varied statistical categories.
The Warsaw Tigers girls’ basketball squad had much cause to celebrate in the nightcap of the boys’ and girls’ basketball doubleheader in the Tiger Den Saturday night. They started the evening honoring five senior athletes and finished the evening hoisting the Northern Lakes Conference (NLC) championship trophy following their 60-24 victory over the Concord Minutemen.
Even at perfectly intact, ending Glenn’s perfect season would’ve been a tall task for the Triton Trojans. The Trojans weren’t, and they didn’t.

The Tigers were down 42-31 to Concord with 6:27 to play only to pull even at 56-all on a turnover and 3-pointer by junior Jaxson Gould with 45 seconds to go Friday, Jan. 21 in Northern Lakes Conference boys basketball at McCuen Gym.
History will be made and remembered at the 3rd Annual “We Are Tigers” Dinner and Auction on Thursday, February 24, at The Heritage Room in Winona Lake. The first-ever induction class of the Warsaw Athletics Hall of Fame will take place near the end of the evening. That class includes 10 individual state champions and one team state champion. The first class, as voted on by the Warsaw Hall of Fame Committee, is the Class of 2021, the year of their state championship.
The Manchester University women’s basketball team fell in Heartland Collegiate Athletic conference action at Bluffton University on Wednesday January 19. The Beavers ran past Manchester by a final score of 71-44.
Grace’s women’s basketball team continued its winning ways, registering an 87-41 win over Spring Arbor on Wednesday.
Grace’s men’s basketball team used a dominant inside presence to defeat Spring Arbor 89-61 on Tuesday. The No. 9 Lancers scored 62 of their 89 points in the paint, outscoring the Cougars just with paint points.
