Grace’s men’s basketball team employed its size, speed and strength to dismantle St. Francis 79-68 on Saturday.
The Warsaw Tigers have not struggled much in dealing with their rivals from Plymouth over the last few seasons, winning the previous eight meetings. Though the game was hard fought and for a moment it looked as if the Pilgrims might steal the win, a fadeaway from Tiger senior Drew Heckaman with just two seconds left proved the difference in a 38-37 Warsaw win to make it nine straight over the Pilgrims.
Tippecanoe Valley, the last remaining girls basketball team in the Times-Union coverage area, will continue its postseason run Saturday afternoon at Jimtown High School in one of two games that will crown regional champions.
A win against South Bend Career Academy on Thursday night would give Lakeland Christian at least a co-championship of the Hoosier Plains Conference. At times it wasn’t pretty, at others it was downright stressful, but after 32 hard-fought minutes, the Cougars were cutting down nets and celebrating a 64-62 victory.

A dominant and total team effort led the way for Wawasee Tuesday night as the Warriors picked up a 58-30 win over visiting Elkhart Christian at the Hardwood Teepee.

The Tippecanoe Valley Lady Vikings banked on their experience and their confidence going nine-deep with personnel in critical moments to hold off the feisty, upset-minded John Glenn Falcons to capture the IHSAA Class 3A Sectional 18 title Saturday night 44-38.

Friday night’s Class 4A Sectional 4A semifinal had fans making the usual Tigers versus Lions remarks. There was a different angle to the contest’s outcome, however, in the form of “Stout” defense by the Elkhart Lions in the form of 5’7”junior guard Samiyah Stout and 5’11” freshman center Shaniyah Stout.
After exiting last year’s postseason tournament a little earlier than they would’ve liked, the Tippecanoe Valley Lady Vikings came out ready to roll in their tournament game of 2023 against host school Bremen in the semifinal of 3A Sectional 18 Friday night. Tippy Valley used a monster 24-0 run early on in the game to put the Lions into a hole they would not be able to crawl out of.
This particular week each year is stacked with vocational and avocational peaks. Instead of my thoughts covering one topic in nearly 1,000 words, I find myself full of snippets to share with you today.
Boys Basketball
Tippecanoe Valley senior Tayde Kiser can certainly score in bunches with the best of them. The guard used a personal 9-0 run in the second quarter as well as a 17-point third quarter on his way to compiling 38 points, willing his team to a 62-50 victory, their ninth straight win, over the visiting Wabash Apaches in the process on Thursday night.
Grace’s men’s basketball team led from start to finish in a comprehensive win over Mt. Vernon Nazarene on Wednesday.
Wawasee saw its 2022-23 girls basketball season come to a close with a 50-42 loss to NorthWood Tuesday, Jan. 31 in the first game of IHSAA Class 3A Sectional 20.
