The Manchester girls golf team used consistency, putting four players in the 40s, to beat visiting Wawasee 186-208 at Sycamore Golf Club Wednesday afternoon. Lydia Little posted a 42, Samantha Kissel had a 45 and Kelsey Eichenauer a 47 to lead the Lady Squires. Karly Eichenauer shot a 52 and Leiah Brandenburg a 53 for Manchester.
Five-year baseball coach Bill Barr has decided to step down from his position at Grace College. Cam Screeton will serve as the interim baseball coach. A national search for Grace’s next baseball coach will begin immediately. Barr and his wife Jacki will move to Ohio where the pair will teach. The move also allows the Barrs to be closer to family.
Rainy weather caused several sporting events to be postponed or cancelled Monday. In boys tennis, Manchester’s match at Wawasee was moved to 4:30 p.m. today. The Squires cross country meet at Oak Hill was also moved to this afternoon, with races beginning at 5 p.m.
Cami Dahms and Kyla Kohler had four kills each, and Sydney Hobbs had eight assists in Lakeland Christian Academy’s 25-11, 25-21, 25-8 home loss to Jimtown Monday night.
Triton opened the 2016 girls volleyball season with a straight-set win over visiting John Glenn, 25-12, 25-19, 25-9 Monday night in the Trojan Trench. Hannah Wanemacher had 12 assists and four aces in the match, and Nicole Sechrist added 10 kills, 10 digs and three aces.
Warsaw opened its girls volleyball season with a 25-10, 25-21, 25-17 loss at Leo Monday night. Statistical leaders for the Lady Tigers were Kacy Bragg with 12 assists and two kills, Lexie Day with three kills and an ace, and Erin Peugh with eight digs and four kills.
After a scoreless first half, Manchester lost its girls soccer season opener 1-0 at Columbia City Monday night. “Despite great defensive efforts from Ellie Milam, Bailey Sewell, Melissa Saucedo, and Olivia Dockter, Columbia City scored with 23 minutes left in the game,” said Manchester head coach Jen Birch.
Wawasee opened its 2016 girls soccer season with a 7-2 win over Lakeland at Warrior Field Monday night. Leigh Ann Schrack scored three times for the Lady Warriors, with Meg Heinisch and Alyssa Bilyard adding two goals each. The 2016 season kicked off with a flair for Grace’s men’s soccer team. The Lancers came from behind to claim a 2-1 win in overtime on Saturday at Savannah College of Art and Design. Dominic Harris provided the game-winning strike in the final minute of the first overtime period
Manchester placed all five players in the top eight, including four of the top five spots, to easily claim the Wabash County girls golf tournament Saturday at Sycamore Golf Club. Southwood’s Dayna Dale was the medalist, shooting a 3-over par 75 to outdistance runner-up Lydia Little of Manchester by 19 shots. Leiah Brandenburg was a shot behind Little at 95.
Landing a pair of players in the top three places, Wawasee finished third in its girls golf invitational tournament Saturday at South Shore Golf Club. Concord was the team champion at 376, with Northridge second at 397 and the Lady Warriors a shot back of the runner-up spot. Madison Beaman had an 89 to finish second overall, and senior classmate Aubrey Schmeltz was a shot back in a tie for third. Zoe White tied for 10th at 98, with Jadison Rostochak shooting a 122 and Valerie Haessig checking in at 133.
The new artificial turf at Warsaw Community High School’s Fisher Field at the Tiger Athletic Complex was officially dedicated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony before the football scrimmage with Tippecanoe Valley Friday night.
Grace’s women’s soccer program has experienced a rejuvenation in the past decade, growing from an afterthought into a national contender under head coach Michael Voss. Last year the Lady Lancers put an exclamation point on the program’s rise by reaching the NAIA National Championships for the first time. But despite a myriad of milestones last year — winning an NAIA Opening Round match, posting a 15-3-3 record, finishing the year ranked No. 11 in the NAIA poll — Voss is far from satisfied. He has his sights set higher.
Grace’s men’s soccer team celebrated its 50th year in style last season, enjoying a 14-7-3 record and a trip to NCCAA Nationals. But head coach Matt Hotchkin maintains that the success of 2015 was both a reward and a curse. The Lancers may have surprised a lot of people last year—“even ourselves,” as Hotchkin noted. So playing with a target on their back will be a new challenge for Grace in 2016.

Warsaw’s Lady Tiger golf team earned a pair of wins Thursday at Stonehenge Country Club, posting a nine-hole score of 182 to Rochester’s 230 and Triton’s 271. The Warsaw Speedway Hall of Fame will induct its 2016 class Friday night at what is now known as Warsaw Motorsports Complex. Friday’s schedule will also include 600 micro sprints, both wing and non-wing, and Jr. micro sprints.
Warsaw’s girls golf team improved to 2-1 on the season with an easy 188-269 win over West Noble at Stonehenge Tuesday. The Lady Tigers had four players break 50 for the nine-hole match. Madi Graham was the medalist with a 44, Page Desenberg shot a 47, Delaney Wihebrink a 48 and Madelyn Ray a 49. Izzy Ray rounded out the varsity lineup with a 54.
Four Lady Squire golfers broke 50 in Manchester’s 185-206 road win over Columbia City at Eagle Glenn Golf Club Tuesday. Samantha Kissel birdied the par-3 second hole on her way to a 43 to lead Manchester. Karly Eichenauer and Kelsey Eichenauer each shot 47 and Madyson Ulrey posted a 48. Leah Brandenburg, stepping up from the junior varsity, had a 57.
Fielding a full varsity squad for the first time this season, Whitko fell to Southern Wells 206-249 in girls golf at Sycamore Golf Club Tuesday.

ROCHESTER – Tippecanoe Valley’s girls golf team split its first head-to-head match of the 2016 season, falling to Pioneer and beating Caston at Mill Creek/Round Barn Golf Club in Rochester Monday. Pioneer posted a team score of 222, with the Lady Vikings at 237 and Caston at 253. Match medalist honors were shared by Caston’s Berklee Blackman and Pioneer’s Brandlyn Shotly, while the Lady Vikings were led by Victoria Biddle’s 53.
Madi Graham shot a career-low 79 and placed fourth individually, pacing the Warsaw girls golf team to a fourth-place finish in the Canterbury Invitational at Chestnut Hills Golf Club in Fort Wayne Monday. Warsaw’s team total of 380 was 42 shots better than the same tournament last season, according to head coach Tad Nieter.
