Indiana Wesleyan junior and Warsaw alum Kyle Mangas scored the 2,000th point of his college career Saturday night in the Wildcats’ 107-102 win over ninth-ranked and previously unbeaten Bethel University.
The Manchester wrestling team hosted the 2020 Spartan Mat Classic on Saturday in Stauffer-Wolfe Arena. The annual tournament featured athletes representing 17 different institutions. Notable teams in attendance included nationally ranked Wabash College, Marian, Ohio Wesleyan, and Indiana Tech.
In their first game since Dec. 21, the Warsaw Tigers boys basketball team defeated a tall, physical Valparaiso team Friday night 43-40 in a game that went down to the buzzer. Valparaiso’s superior size and length gave Warsaw fits throughout the opening half. They repeatedly fed the post, and in particular 6-foot-6 junior Cooper Jones, who had eight points off post-ups in the first half. Their length also resulted in numerous Warsaw turnovers, especially when trying to kick the ball out of the post.
In the first of three games on the road, the Tippecanoe Valley boys basketball team started off the New Year with a test against Columbia City. For the Vikings’ last ever meeting with the Eagles at Donald S. Weeks Gymnasium, it was one to be forgotten about.

Grace’s men’s basketball team picked up another win to end a successful non-conference season. The Lancers beat Great Lakes Christian 87-68 on Thursday at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center. Two players for Grace had double-doubles, and four players scored in double figures in a balanced effort.

So it happened again this week — a participant in a professional sporting event left the playing surface to confront a fan in the seating area. The player was named Isaiah Thomas (no, not the one who played for IU and then the Pistons) of the Washington Wizards, and while I do not in any way defend what he did, I certainly understand why he was upset.
With both the Tippecanoe Valley and Whitko boys basketball teams enduring a losing streak, Friday night’s game at was going to be pivotal for both going into the new year. Being down by as much as 20, Tippecanoe Valley got to within four points with one minute left in the game, but it would not be enough as Whitko emerged victorious 53-48 in Three Rivers Conference action.
In each team’s first Northern Lakes Confer-ence matchup of the season, the Warsaw Tigers boys basketball team defeated the Wawasee Warriors 54-36 at home Friday night. Despite a spirited defensive game from the Warriors, a high-percentage shooting night from inside the arc – 16 of 21 – kept the Tigers on top for all but a few moments in the first quarter.
