Grace College is expanding its athletic programs to include esports. The program will be led in its inaugural season by head coach Andrew Palladino. The Lancers are the third Crossroads League school to announce an esports team and join a number of schools in the area fielding a competitive esports squad.

Warsaw’s latest girls basketball victory came with comebacks. The Tigers climbed out of a 9-0 hole in the first quarter and watched a 20-point lead in the fourth period shrink to four before securing a 62-55 Northern Lakes Conference triumph against Northridge.

For the second straight game, Grace College’s men’s basketball team went on the road and upset a ranked team. Charlie Warner sank the game-deciding free throw with just over a minute left in overtime, securing a 77-76 victory for the Lancers against No. 17 St. Francis.

Playing its fourth game in seven days, Wawasee had pep in its steps early in a Northern Lakes Conference boys basketball game against NorthWood Friday at the Hardwood Teepee.

A game of streaks, beginning with a 10-0 Northridge first quarter run had Warsaw Tigers down 17-5 in first quarter at Northridge High School’s intimate but noisy gym. Although the Tigers made three impressive runs in the beginning of the second and third quarters, that early hurdle was hard to clear. The Tigers fell to 8-3 overall an 1-1 in the Northern Lakes Conference in a 59-55 loss to the Northridge Raiders.

Grace College’s men’s basketball team continued its hot start to the Crossroads League season with a marquee victory on Wednesday. The Lancers (12-5, 4-1 CL) upended No. 9 Bethel 100-95 on the road, remaining in a tie atop the league standings.

Garrett got off to a blistering start offensively – 5-of-5 from the field and 2-of-2 from three-point range – en route to a 23-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. Freshman Bailey Kelham, who recently set an Indiana freshmen girls’ record when she scored 45 in a single game, led the visitors with eight points in the period.

Grace College’s women’s basketball team nearly topped the century mark in a 98-77 victory over Bethel on Wednesday. The Lady Lancers led a balanced attack with five players scoring in the double-digits, highlighted by 22 points from Kyannah Stull. Grace continued its recent dominance over Bethel, winning its seventh straight in the series. Grace’s defense created chaos as usual, forcing 31 turnovers.

While holiday tournaments and single-day showcases wrapped up last week around the state, our Week 9 IBCA/Subway Player of the Week winners posted double-doubles, triple-doubles, and two ladies even surpassed the 20-rebound plateau in their games.

Warsaw started off red hot, but turned cold about the same time Culver Academies got hot. The visiting Eagles had just a little more in the tank to turn a tie game after three quarters into a 55-47 win at the Tiger Den Tuesday night. The Tigers bolted out to a quick 8-0 lead in the first 3-1/2 minutes of the game, getting a trey and a jumper from Bishop Walters with a Wyatt Amiss three-pointer sandwiched in between. But the Eagles wasted little time getting into the swing to things. Culver cut the Warsaw lead to two by the end of the period, and that's when the fun began.

Warsaw Community High School graduate and University of Missouri kicker Harrison Mevis was named to the Associated Press Indiana Class 6A All-State football team Friday. Tippecanoe Valley's Wes Melanson, Jace Potter, Johnny Gonsalez, Jaden Conley and Jaden Potter were Honorable Mention on the Class 3A team. The complete list of honorees appears on page 3B
