- Fight Poverty - A Losing Battle Fight Poverty Editor, Times-Union: I am currently a student this summer at Indiana University's Intensive Freshman Seminar. One assignment for our class, Poverty in the U.S., was to research our local town's poverty rate and the agencies in that area that assist those affected by economic hardships. While completing this assignment, I learned how hard it is to stay out of poverty in a society where the poverty thresholds are unrealistic and minimum wage is no where near the "living wage" needed to survive.

- Jail Concerns - Teacher - Billy Sunday Jail Concerns Editor, Times-Union: Recently in the Times-Union Monica Neff expressed her concerns about the cruelty the Kosciusko County Jail placed on inmates receiving "only" four visitors per month. All of us make choices. No one forces someone to commit a crime that lands them in jail or prison. But while they are in jail, the taxpayers must pay for their food, clothing, shelter and recreation. Want to discover cruelty? Find out what countries across the ocean do to inmates. It's time America got tough on crime and paid more attention to the rights and concerns of victims! The Kosciusko County Jail is to be commended for their four visitors per month policy; it's a reminder jail is meant to be tough.

- Fine History - Act Of Kindness - Central Park Fine History Editor, Times-Union: After reading this history that Mr.Coplen has written for the Kosciusko County Historical Society, it makes me proud of the fact that I have always been a citizen of this county. Mr.Coplen interviewed many people in the county to compile facts, and along with numerous pictures, he has woven them into a beautiful narrative of early county history. I was thrilled to see a picture of my maternal grandmother in a group of ladies from the Burket Methodist Church. My children live out of state, but they are graduates of county schools - they will enjoy the copies I am sending them for Christmas. Thank you, Mr.Daniel Coplen, for your dedication - you have given us a beautiful history.

- Jobs, Jobs, Jobs - Book About Cancer - Economic Development - Tiger Fans Applauded - No Safe Tan Jobs, Jobs, Jobs Editor, Times-Union: I feel the need to respond to the "News Views" column written by Gary Gerard in the Feb.21 and 22 edition of the Times-Union.As someone who works for a not-for-profit agency that assists people in finding employment, I see how "big" the news of unemployment really is - every day - not just in an election year.I am sure Mr.Gerard is correct in all of the statistics that he cites, and if the reality actually matched these figures, his flippancy about the unemployment rate and the number of people who are out of work would not be as irritating.
