A woman who’s young son was found wandering a Warsaw street without a shirt and shoes is now facing a neglect charge.
Kayla Ranae Fitzpatrick, 27, of 611 E. Market St., Warsaw, was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail at 3:49 p.m. Wednesday and faces a Level 6 felony neglect of a dependent charge.
According to the probable cause affidavit filed Sept. 14 in Kosciusko Superior Court III, on Sept. 3, a Warsaw police officer was traveling on East Market Street near the area of South Park Avenue when two citizens waved the officer over.
When the officer went the pair, they were holding a young boy who was not wearing shoes or a shirt and they said they found him walking alone. The citizens told police they were getting ready to call 911 but then saw the officer.
The officer knew the child was Fitzpatrick’s, according to court papers, because of previous incidents. When police went to Fitzpatrick’s home, Fitzpatrick told police she went to sleep with her boyfriend and was not aware her child was out on the streets. Fitzpatrick further told police that she was paying a woman to watch the child inside the home, but that the woman must have left.
According to court papers, this was the third incident involving the child being found unsupervised in the roadway with traffic. Police were called for those instances July 17 and Sept. 2.
