WPD Partners With Burger King, Meijer For Shop With A HeroWarsaw Police Department, Burger King and Meijer teamed up Thursday to be heros for local children in need.
The annual Shop With A Hero started with dinner at Burger King at 6 p.m. Thursday. Santa Claus made a visit during dinner. After that, officers and their families took the children shopping at Meijer.
Roy Navarro, WPD, said, “We take care of whatever necessities - the coat, the shoes and clothes, stuff like that. Then we kind of go from there and do the toys and whatever else.”
There is a limit to how much students can spend as it is an assisted event from Meijer and people from the community donated to WPD for the event, Navarro said.
Most of the students were from Warsaw Community Schools “and we are just helping them have a little better Christmas,” said Navarro.
There is an opportunity for students to participate in the event more than once if there is a need seen to help out with them. Children are chosen to participate in the Shop With A Hero event through school principals or teachers.
Shop With A Hero has been going on since 2013 and this year 10 students participated, he said.
His big thing with the event is building relationships with the kids.
“A lot of them have come up through, up in the community and don’t know who the police are and we just want to make sure they have the opportunity to make sure they get to know us,” he said.
He thinks it’s important to keep the relationship strong with kids because “they are going to be the ones running our community and they going to go to school with us for the next few years. And they’re going to get to know us and we’re going to get to know them. It’s always great to see that relationship blossom.”
