NORTH MANCHESTER - William D. Jagger, 86, of Silver Lake, went to be with his Lord at 4:05 a.m. May 25, 2008, in his residence.
He was born Oct. 15, 1921, in Columbia City, to Fred E. and Ethel M. Gipe Jagger. On Aug. 15, 1942, he married Evelyn L. Kline, who survives.
He was a 1939 Silver Lake High School graduate. He farmed with his father for a short while, was a house painter and a clerk for the U.S. Postal service. In 1966, he and his wife purchased Summe Hardware, Silver Lake, and operated it with his son, Larry, until 1994. He was a member and deacon of West Eel River Church of the Brethren, Silver Lake; a member of American Legion, Silver Lake; and a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans, Warsaw. During the years he was raising his children, he was a Boy Scout leader for more than 10 years. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking and "tinkering" in his workshop. He loved his Lord, adored his "Evey" and treasured his children and grandchildren. He was a World War II U.S Marines veteran, serving in the Pacific Theatre, suffering severe injury during the battle of Saipan. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
Also surviving are two sons, Larry W. (and spouse Faye) Jagger, Winona Lake, and Dr. Michael J. Jagger, Mishawaka; a daughter, Gaylo (and spouse David) Goss, Rochester; a sister, Thelma (and spouse Jack) Butler, Laketon; 10 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Phillip E. Jagger, who died in 1970; and two sisters; and a daughter-in-law, Ramona Jagger.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at West Eel River Church of the Brethren, Silver Lake, with Pastor Paul Tinkel officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Silver Lake.
Calling is from 2 to 8 p.m. today at DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary, North Manchester, and one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.
