William ‘Bill’ Thomas

William "Bill" Thomas, age 83, of rural Atwood, Warsaw, passed away on Aug. 17, 2026, surrounded by his family and the land he cherished.
He was born on Feb. 11, 1943, to Donald Wayne Thomas and Doris Koontz Thomas in Warsaw. Bill married Rebecca Becky Wertenberger on June 23, 1963.
Bill attended Atwood High School and would remain deeply rooted in the community throughout his life. A true steward of the land, he farmed 2,000 acres with diligence and care. As a self-employed man, he was known throughout the area as the "Milk Man," and his reputation for integrity and reliability preceded him wherever he went. Bill also installed drainage tile, supporting area farmers and contributing to the agricultural community.
Among his many professional and personal accomplishments, Bill was particularly proud of being recognized as the 4-H grand champion steer and the reserve-grand champion steer, achievements that reflected both his dedication and skill from a young age. He shared his knowledge and passion by serving as a 4-H leader, inspiring generations of young people to appreciate farming and rural life.
Bill’s entrepreneurial spirit found further expression with the opening of “The Old Drug Store” in Silver Lake — a beloved ice cream and candy shop that became a gathering place for smiles, stories and sweet treats. His fascination with history and craftsmanship was evident in his love for antiques and in the many hours he spent restoring antique tractors. As a founding member of the Echoes of the Past Tractor Club and an active participant in various tractor clubs and steam shows, Bill found enjoyment and deep satisfaction among like-minded enthusiasts.
He loved traveling, once embarking on a memorable seven-week adventure, driving to Alaska, creating treasured memories along the way. Throughout all his endeavors, he was known first and foremost as a very kind and friendly man, a hard worker, and, above all, a good man — qualities that endeared him to all who had the fortune to know him.
Cherishing his memory are his beloved wife, Becky Thomas; his daughters, Betsy Thomas and Beth Ancil-Thomas; his five grandchildren: Keylah (Marcas Sadler) Derry, Danyelle Palmer, Jordyn Ancil, Tyler (Courtney) Palmer and Morgan (Zach) Olinske; and his six great-grandchildren.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Jim Thomas; and sister, Sue Huffman.
William “Bill” Thomas leaves behind a legacy built on family, faith, and community — a life well-lived in both its simplicity and its richness. He will be dearly missed but never forgotten, as his spirit endures in the hearts of those whom he touched.
Donations in memory of Bill may be given to the Echos of the Past, 3797 N. 200 W., Warsaw, IN 46582.
The family is grieving privately. Bill will be laid to rest at Stony Point Cemetery at a later date. Titus Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 2000 Sheridan St., Warsaw, IN 46580 has been entrusted with arrangements.
