William “Bill” Kevin Newland, 73, of Warsaw, passed away at 10:56 a.m. Jan. 20, 2012, in Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw.
He was born Oct. 19, 1938, in Plainwell, Mich., to William and Francis Earl Newland. On June 19, 1976, in Warsaw, he married Nanette Pratt, who survives.
He was a graduate of Delton (Mich.) High School and attended Western Michigan University and Grace College. He faithfully served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1956-59 and was honorably discharged as a PN2. He retired from Cargill Inc. and was a former owner and partner of Ace Hardware Store, Mentone. He was a member of St. Anne’s Episcopal Church, Warsaw, where he served as treasurer, senior warden, junior warden, vestry and was active in the Men’s Service Club.
In addition, he was a 25-year Mason and belonged to Pierceton Masonic Lodge 377, Mizpah Shrine, Fort Wayne, and was a member and past president of the Kosciusko County Shrine Club.
Bill enjoyed gardening and loved playing golf.
Also surviving are his children: Anthony (and spouse Cathy) Miner, VanBuren; Keith (and spouse Lisa) Newland, Warsaw; and Kurt (and spouse Wendy) Newland, Delton; siblings: Steve (and spouse Debbie) Newland, Delton; Sidney Erickson, Bellview, Mich.; Leslie (and spouse John) McElduff, Frankfort, Mich.; Adrian Newland, Wayland, Mich.; Caroline Newland, Ostego, Mich.; and Kristine (and spouse Hugh) Newland, Plainwell, Mich.; grandchildren: Emily, Nicholas, Katie, Alexis, Anjalaya, Jared, Rachel, Rebekah, Elizabeth, Matthew, Anna and Levi; and great-grandchildren, Aiden and Ella. He was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas; a son, Matthew Miner; and his parents.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church with the Right Rev. Brian Grantz and the Rev. Corinne Hodges officiating, and with members of Warsaw American Legion Post 49 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1126 conducting military honors.
Calling is from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church with a Masonic memorial service at 7 p.m. by members of Pierceton Masonic Lodge 377.
