Spring is here, and as a busy wildlife rehabilitator I would like to remind good-hearted people of a few things concerning helping wildlife in need.
First, it is not legal to keep a wild animal as a pet, and they do not make good pets. Animals kept illegally can be confiscated, and you can be fined for having them in your possession. Also, if you find an animal in need, please do not attempt to feed it, but first contact the local police or DNR for the number of a licensed wildlife rehabilitator near you before you do anything, and talk to them. Many times well-meaning people do more damage than good when handling a wild baby. And please remember wild animals can be dangerous and do carry disease. Do not think that because a wild animals acts friendly, it is friendly. Wild animals are not normally friendly and may be sick. Do not allow children to handle them. Do not poke at an injured animal. It may not be as injured as you think, and may attack if threatened.
So, please, if you want to help an animal that appears to be in need, contact a wildlife rehabilitator before you do anything that might do more harm than good. Thank you.
