LARWILL – Whitko Career Academy is highlighting Reese Stonebraker, a student in the Next Level Program of Studies Healthcare Pathway, who is applying her classroom and lab knowledge through the Work-Based Learning/Capstone program in Whitko High School’s Nursing Department.
“The thing I love most about my job is getting to be a part of helping students with needs — whether that be physically or medically,” Stonebraker said. “Seeing the different backgrounds and stories of people is what makes my job unique.”
Over the past two years, Stonebraker has completed courses in biomedical sciences and Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) training, where she developed skills in patient care, medical terminology, anatomy, infection control and clinical procedures. These courses have laid the foundation for her success in a real healthcare setting, according to a news release from Whitko Community Schools.
As part of her work-based learning experience, Stonebraker assists with caring for diabetic students, charting daily health records, providing first aid, administering medications and managing student health needs. This hands-on opportunity allows her to use the technical and professional skills she’s learned through her Healthcare Pathway and gain valuable insight into the medical field.
Stonebraker plans to attend a four-year college to earn her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Her goal is to work in pediatrics and eventually become a travel nurse.
“This job helps me achieve my career goal because it gives me a small glimpse of what working with children and families is like,” Reese shared.
