Where Are the Police?

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:
In my travels everyday in and around the city and county I see blatant disregard for laws of the road. Drivers running stop signs, driving recklessly, texting, reading, eating, we all know about the distractions. We all see them and a large percentage of us have done them. And all the unsafe vehicles that would not pass a safety vehicle test of years past. Why don’t we have a vehicle inspection in this state? Whatever happened to the loud muffler law in this city? A stop sign, means full stop not a rolling stop!

Where are the police? If I see all this illegal activity, why don’t they? Or do they, and they choose to do nothing because they either are too busy, or don’t want to do the paper work on such menial tasks? I have heard them make these choices on the air, while talking to another unit. “Should I stop him for rolling through that stop sign?” “Nah, too much paper work, where are we going for lunch?”

I do want to give the city and county police credit where credit is do. They do a wonderful job of cleaning up the aftermath of these blatant acts of breaking the law incidents. Usually, it takes two to five police units to do this, however.

I would just like to know, am I the only one who listens to the police scanner? Am I the only one who sees the law breakers?  Am I the only one who wonders if we are paying the police to “protect and serve” by doing preventive police work, or just cleaning up the mess afterward?

I will say also, that I will not get into a political discourse over my opinion on this matter. You either agree or disagree. If you disagree, you are guilty of breaking the laws of the road, or of not enforcing them.
