What Is Happiness?

Editor, Times-Union:

As a citizen, you would seem to think that to flourish in a society that profits off subjugating and manipulating fellow human beings, you would almost have to become a person who cares little about the well being of another person, unless, maybe, it is for your own gain. However, though this goes on in every aspect of our daily lives as we use our fellow human beings in order to survive and carry on, for one reason or another.

To an extent most of us become socially induced narcissist because most of us want to survive and carry on, no doubt, we want to be happy.

But, what is happiness? Well, the biggest majority of citizens when asked what would make them happy say, "a lot of money". Many will try to deny feeling this way for whatever reason or another, however, most of us need and pursue money.

So what is the purpose of our lives? What are we here for? Is it to manipulate and subjugate our fellow human beings for gain?

According to our media, the chairman of Goldman Sachs says, "He is doing God's work" as he manipulates and subjugates his fellow human beings for profit. I do suppose though, all of us beckon to our own god, in our own realm, in our own way.

I wonder, is morality taught, or is it something we are just born with? Was our constitution put together for the betterment of its sovereign citizens, or for profit? What is the morality in a for-profit society? Is it cowboy capitalism, and trickle down economics? What is the value of human life?

Immanuel Kant, a sixteenth-century philosophy, believed that people should not be used, but ought to be regarded as having the highest intrinsic value. Kant also believed that you should always treat humanity, whether in your own person or that of another, never simple as a means, but always at the same time as an end. In other words, all of us have our own desires, our own needs, our own will to carry on, consequently, our own end.

However, there are those who have taken control and patented the human libido, consequently, human desire and will has been manipulated and subjugated for profit. Cowboy capitalism and trickle-down economics has devoured our society.

As citizens we are dollars signs to be used for somebody else's ends, and everything goes. Even when you have been drained of all life forces you are still recycled through the system for profit.

People ought to be regarded as having the highest intrinsic value. People should not be treated merely as means to someone else's selfish ends.

People should be treated as means to their own ends. As citizens we have our own intrinsic value, however, there are those who get intrinsic value mixed up with instrumental value. As citizens would we rather be treated as having intrinsic value or an instrument for someone, instrumental value?
