Webster Man Facing Counterfeit ChargeA North Webster man recently was arrested after he allegedly tried to pass a fake $20 bill at an area gas station.

Troy Keith Carpenter, 33, of 7227 E. Blacks Court South, North Webster, was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday and faces a Level 6 felony counterfeiting charge.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed Jan. 14 in Kosciusko Superior Court III, on Dec. 16 North Webster police were called to a Circle K gas station after an employee called police and said a man had just tried to use a fake $20 bill at the store.

The employee told police that after the customer, later identified as Carpenter, was told the bill was fake and couldn’t be used, Carpenter left the store, according to the affidavit.

Police noted the fake bill had the words “prop copy” printed on the backside of the bill and that it was “150% the size of an actual $20 bill and noticeably larger than any other legal tender bills,” according to court papers.

When police spoke with Carpenter, according to the affidavit, he admitted he had tried to use the bill at the gas station but said he didn’t realize the “the noticeably oversized bill was a fake.”

Carpenter’s bond was set at $5,250.
