Weather Forcing Many Closings, Warming Centers Being OpenedToday’s snowfall and the upcoming frigid conditions led to a growing list of cancellations in the area this morning.
Many schools began closing early today as snow continued to fall through the morning.
The National Weather Service predicted 4 to 6 inches of snowfall by the end of today. Frigid temps were expected to spread through the Midwest beginning Tuesday night.
Warsaw city leaders gathered late this morning and announced several changes.
Trash routes normally served on Wednesday will be picked up a day earlier, on Tuesday. Thursday routes will be picked up on Friday, according to city spokesperson Staci Young.
The change in trash routes is being done for worker safety, Young said.
Also, non-essential city offices will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday.
City officials were expected to make more announcements later today.
It remained unclear how recycling schedules would be affected.
Warming centers in Warsaw will be open Tuesday through Friday.
The Pete Thorn Center on Park Avenue will be open during the day those days for anyone seeking a warm climate. Fellowship Mission, a homeless center on Winona Avenue, will serve as a warming station overnight. Young said.
Plain Township Trustee Tyler Huffer announced plans to use the township building in Leesburg as a warming center during normal office hours on Wednesday and Thursday.
Huffer said anyone who needs assistance to get to the warming center should contact Kosciusko Central Dispatch at 574-267-5667.
“Our local churches and community partnerships will be assisting individuals getting to the warming center, as needed,” Huffer said.
Napanee will have a warming center open from 5 p.m. Tuesday until 8 a.m. Friday at West Park Pavilion, 500 N. Nappanee St.
Every area school closed for the day today or closed early as weather conditions worsened.
Baker Youth Club and KidsClub will be remain open until 6 p.m. to accommodate Warsaw School students.
The Kosciusko County Spelling Bee, originally scheduled for Tuesday, has been rescheduled for 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at Milford School.
Also, the Warsaw class of 1961 reunion, which was scheduled to meet Wednesday at the Pallette at the Wyndham Garden, has been canceled.
Tuesday’s overnight low temperature was predicted to fall to 19 below zero and produce wind chills near 40 below, the National Weather Service said.
Wednesday’s high was expected to be near minus 12. Overnight temps Wednesday will fall to about minus 19.
Thursday’s high will rise to about 1 degree above zero and the low will be about 4 below, the weather service said.
