The Agnes Pruyn Chapman Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) held the 2025-26 DAR Good Citizens Recognition on March 24.
In attendance were Samantha Bloomfield from Lakeland Christian Academy, Anna Sterk from Tippecanoe Valley High School, Sophia Smith from Wawasee High School and Gavin Ott from Warsaw Community High School. The Good Citizens each received a certificate and a pin, according to news release from DAR.
The students had the opportunity to apply for the Chapter DAR Good Citizen Scholarship by writing a timed essay with the title “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It” with the prompt “Describe how the characteristics of a good citizen help renew and strengthen the democracy achieved by the Patriots of the American Revolution.”
Students applying for the scholarship also provided information to meet the scholarship entry requirements set by the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. Three non-DAR judges used the NSDAR score sheet to judge all entries for selecting the chapter scholarship recipient.
The Chapter Good Citizen Scholarship went to Smith.
Smith’s portfolio was then entered for further competition in the Good Citizen Scholarship Contest. A chapter’s Good Citizen Scholarship winner has the chance to advance to district, state, division and then to the national level of the contest.
The NSDAR Good Citizens and Scholarship Contest, created in 1934, is intended to encourage and reward qualities of good citizenship for male and female high school seniors.
Students are selected by their schools because they demonstrate the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism in their homes, schools and communities to an outstanding degree.
